When the pedal is too big for the foot, they end up placing their feet in different positions when the ideal spot is the ball of the foot. When the pedal is the right size for small fee, it's much more intuitive for them to put their foot in the right place and creating good pedalling habits while young.

The low-profile design with a deep concave allows your foot to “sit in” the pedal and improves grip and comfort.
